Reading Blog #6

Chapter 11 in the book talks about writing a reveiw. It tells us the various things we can review.  That even our opinions are technically reviews. Reviews are something that I deal with daily, from getting someones opinion on tomato soup or having one of my leads stand behind me and fill out a GSE (Guest Services Evaluation) and give me their review on how I can improve as an employee.

I found it interesting that there are so many different things that you can reveiw. For instance, the book mentions how a tv film critic has the ability to use certian parts from movies or shows they are critiquing but she has to keep her own personal comments to a dull roar, but someone who is writing a review on a blog or in a newspaper can say practically whatever they want.

As a  person constantly being watched and reviewed at work, I can see the need for it. Especially in Disneyland. On the GSE they make sure you are saying all five parts of the script they make you memorize.. Those five parts are

1. Two part greeting

2. Did you find everything ok

3. Comment on their items

4. Sugest items

5. Two part Thank you and goodbye.

and at disneyland If you are being reviewed and you do not say everything you are suppose to you get in serious trouble and maybe even get a verbal or written warning. I believe that reviews like this are ridiculous for retail workers. Maybe if they had something similar to watch out for malpractice with medical professionals it may benefit people.

I also see the need to review movies and shows so the public doesn’t waste their money on something that isn’t good. Overall I enjoy critiques and reviews, but I also believe their is a time and a place for it… and shouldn’t be everyday I go into work.

(sorry half rant of how mad I am at work at the moment)

I worked until 1 am yesterday and I have to do it again tonight… this is how I feel at the moment… absolutely dead.

English 101: paper #3

The Life of a Facebookaholic

Is social media making us stupid, lazy and unproductive? I definitely believe it is. I am experiencing it right now as I am writing this paper. The constant need to be checking my Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. has lead me to a point where I have procrastinated everything. I am writing this paper, hours before it is due solely because I cannot help but get preoccupied in social media. It’s one thing that most social media users on sites like Twitter and Facebook status’s lack of spell check and grammar. Some may find it difficult with writing essays in the future, but when social media has taken over what you do in your spare time to the point that you are completely unproductive is absolutely absurd.

Facebook has over a billion people using their site, with about 618 million daily users, you can see that it is occupying a good majority of our life’s. I have found myself spending ridiculous hours staring at my Facebook feed, sometimes up to six hours a day. This isn’t uncommon, the amount of time people spend checking their Facebook is 700 billion minutes per month. That is a lot of time to be wasting on the computer.  How can scrolling through a website for that long be productive at all?  We should be spending the time either face to face with another person do doing homework.  About 98% of adults eighteen to twenty four use Facebook, when 24% of that age group is unemployed. (http://www.policymic.com) (http://www.statisticbrain.com)

The things we waste our time with on Facebook is silly, from poking strange people to liking pictures, comments and life events. I have even had friends perfect their stalking skills using Facebook. Personally I believe one of the biggest issues with Facebook is that we strive too much to tell our whole life’s story on Facebook, when it is just wasting your time. Also it is so easy to stalk you when you but put all of your information out to the world.

Then there is YouTube. YouTube is a whole new extreme in itself. We spend about 2.9 billion hours on YouTube a month collectively.  It’s not hard to see how spending too much time watching cat videos, or anything else that consumes your time really adds up. The average amount of YouTube videos I watch  when I am technically suppose to be studying is fifteen videos in a day. That may not seem like too much but when the average video lasts about five minutes, I am waiting over an hour of my time on something that doesn’t benefit me one bit.

If any one needs to cut back on their time on the Internet is me. Personally I spend 3 hours a day or more on YouTube, and I am constantly using my Facebook throughout the day. My use of the Internet always seems to take precedence over anything else in my life. Causing me to fall behind on homework, but what’s the point of it all? There is no logical reason to waste any minute watching strange YouTube videos or checking Facebook messages. There are a lot better things to do with your time. If people applied themselves to work or school as much as they are dedicated to social media I believe we could be more successful.

I will admit that there are many benefits to websites like Facebook and YouTube, because you get to connect with people you normally wouldn’t on a normal day. Facebook allows you to talk to old high school friends, and old colleges. YouTube allows you to form a community with your favorite YouTubers and their fans. My generation wouldn’t be the same with out these social media websites.

Even though there is a dark downside to social media that eats up your spare time leaving you with almost nothing, scrounging to get things done on time. I also see why it is needed. I get to talk to people I met in Germany and comment on videos leaving my own personal thoughts. It can be wonderful if you use it right, and that’s what most people struggle with. Especially myself. We live to use it,  love to abuse it, and hate to leave it.

Reading Blog #5: Tweets to Reports

Chapter twenty-seven talks about how social media and how technology may be making an impact on our academic writings. One point that stood out the most in this chapter is that some individuals are writing in a short hand way such as using “idk” or “lol”. Some are even using short hand writing to an extreme by misspelling words on purpose. One of the most common purposefully misspelled word is “luv”. This habit is one of my biggest pet peeves. Even while texting I do not misspell words and I go out of my way to make sure the text message is grammatically correct. The example they use is the book I think is a tad over kill, and not many people use it to that event. I believe it is still a habit that needs to be addressed.

One of the consequences from using a short hand method of writing is having it transfer over to more important documents. I have seen a fellow classmate last semester spell words incorrectly on an academic paper for our english 99 class. The words he would misspell were unimaginable why he would include it in his paper. He used words like “dawn” “sup” and would even use the incorrect use of “their” in a sentence.

******Random tangent that really has nothing to do with the reading other than it relates to the pervious story and I really dislike when this happens.*******

Why is it so hard for a person to use the correct “their/ they’re/there”

It is their ball

They’re going to the ball

The ball is over there.

*** tangent over***

By the end of the chapter it talks about paying attention to our audience, which would have been  helpful knowledge to have when I accidentally forgot my grandma probably wouldn’t know what “lol” or “wth” meant when I texted her… that caused her to think I was calling her something mean. So I will keep that bit of information in mind next time.. :D

I believe social media or the internet in general is how we will end up doing the most basic things from ordering groceries to diagnosing your own illness on WebMD or finding out information for academic purposes, because you can now cite a tweet from twitter in an academic paper.

BEAUTIFUL remix of Clarity-Zedd (must listen if you like the original)

My trip to the ER.

So as many of you guys know I did not come to class today, because I am very sick.. and because I have no clue if there is a reading blog due next class. I decided to just write about my experience in the ER.

It all started out as a normal Monday. I had been sick for almost three weeks when on this particular morning I couldn’t get out of bed. I ended up sleeping through my first class, then finally getting up around noon to go to the rest of my classes. My choir class I was in and out of a blur and can hardly remember the day. I felt like something was seriously wrong so I walked over to the health center in-between class to get some medical attention where they turned me away due to an over flow of students needing to see a doctor. They told me to come back later, so I went to my math class feeling even worse than I did in the morning. During class I was getting dizzy and unable to stay coherent. I ran in and out of class because I kept getting sick. when An hour into class I gave up and went to the health center again.. where I was turned down again. I had no other option than to go to my last class where I was suppose to take a midterm. Before class started I fell asleep in the hallway wearing a face mask. when my teacher told me to go home and take the test later. As I was walking back to my room my health took a turn for the worst. I was almost in tears because of how sick I felt. I called my mom begging her to take me to the ER, and she did. When I got in there I was in the waiting room for almost 3 hours. when I finally got in they started running tests and poking me with needles. It was a horrible experience. They put me on an iv drip to put liquids into my body. They ended up putting in 2 big bags of sodium chloride because I was ridiculously dehydrated, morphine, and some anti nausea medicine.

At the end of my hospital visit a doctor came in and told me what was wrong. He said “ You have multiple viruses and infections and your body cannot keep up with it all, and it started to freak out, causing you to be so dehydrated and in so much pain.”

This was a complete shock to me because I thought I only had a cold for the longest time. Thankfully I got medical attention and medicine so I can make a full recovery. The only sucky part is being on bed rest until I am better, but its okay I get a valid reason to be lazy

Love her? Choke her? Grow Old With Her?

What exactly is love? Can it be defined in a few words or maybe even in a song, sometimes even a movie can capture all forms of love.  I believe that one of my favorite movies that is based in the 1980’s is able to describe love in all of its forms. That movie is called The Wedding Singer. There are two songs in this movie that capture two completely different sides to love. Those songs are “Somebody Kill Me” and “ I Want to Grow Old With You”.  One song shows the pure agony of loving someone who recently left you, and the other song is about a true love that is fulfilling and everything you could hope for.

To fully understand the context of these songs you have to dig a little deeper and understand the plot line of this romantic comedy. The movie is about a young man named Robbie Hart.  Who was engaged to be married to the love of his life Linda who regrettably left him at the alter. After this incident Robbie was so heart broken he finishes writing the love song he wrote to Linda, and it starts out as a gooey love song that says, “You don’t know how much I need you. While you’re near me I don’t feel blue. And when we kiss I know you need me too. I can’t believe I found a love that’s so pure and true” This verse shows his love he had for Linda. It describes his need for this woman in plain words, but things take a turn for the worst when out of no where he sings “But it all was bullsh*t, It was a G*ddamn joke, and when I think of you Linda I hope you f*cking choke.” The sound of his voice when he sings this part is absolutely heartbreaking. You can hear the pure anguish he is feeling.  He blatantly calls her out for leaving him and wishes one of the worst things upon her. He wants her to choke. I believe they use the curse words to add more passion to the lyrics, because if that line read “ It was all a lie, it was just a joke, and when I think of you Linda I hope you choke” it wouldn’t be as comical and it would lose the ability to show exactly how upset at her he is. I believe the use of curse words is just right.

The last part of the song shows that he completely had a mental break down. You can see this because in the last verse he screams, “Oh somebody kill me please, I’m on my knees, pretty pretty please kill me” He went from hating on his former lover to wanting to end his life in a second. The last line of the song truly captures how terrible he feels and how desperately he wants to end his life. The last line of the song he sings “I want to die put a bullet in my head” and then he breaks down into tears.

“Somebody Kill Me” is a powerful love song in my opinion because it shows the dark side of loving someone too much to the point of wanting to end your life. I do not believe many songs capture this awful feeling very well. It is also interesting to me that in the movie this song comes across as funny when the lyrics are nothing close to comical. This movie is able to capture a terrible breakup in a witty light-hearted kind of way.

During the rest of the movie it shows a love triangle between Robbie, Julia and her fiancé Glen. Through out this movie you ever know for sure who is ending up with who when at the end of the movie Julia and Glen get on a plane to Vegas so they can elope. When Robbie finds out this information and gets a flight to Vegas in hopes of finding her and stopping her when if things couldn’t get any cheesier when you find out they are on the same plane. Robbie had a love song prepared for this occasion and he starts to sing one of my favorite love songs of all time. “I Want to Grow Old With You”

The song starts off with a really catchy tune that says, “I want to make you smile whenever you’re sad. Carry you around when your arthritis is bad. All I want to do, is grow old with you”. By the sound of his voice when he sings this line is very sweet. You can hear the love in his voice. You can tell how sincere he is. He is planning for their future and he sees himself with her until they are old and he wants to care for her even later on in their life together. He then goes on and lists the different romantic things e wants to do with her. From getting her medicine when her tummy aches to letting her hold the remote control. This song is full of all the super sweet things you hope your significant other would do for you.

I believe the argument being made in this song is that your significant other should be everything to you, and you should give them your all. This song focuses on the small things that make you love someone. This song emphasizes that the small things can be the most important in a relationship.

The thing about this movie that is the most surprising is that the same character sings both of these songs. He went from hating love to embracing it and falling head over heals over another girl. I believe the overall argument of love from the movie is that there will always be heartbreak, but if you wait for the right person love will be everything you could hope for. This movie shows that even though you may be tied up to someone else, and they may be all you can hope for at the time. If that person you love doesn’t put you first or shows you how much they care in the small ways that love will not last, but the right one will come around

Reading Blog #3

I am not sure if we were supposed to write about chapter 14 or the reading before that! I will just write about chapter 14. I felt like the chapter has helped me using different ways to argue something. Shows how to use analogies, classification, Comparison/contrast,…

It’s cool that the reading may help you on the next essay. It definitely helped me on mine :)

Reading Blog #4: “This is Where I Stand”

Chapter seven talks about taking a position and expressing your ideas. Its something we do daily. From posting a comment on a face boo status, to writing a tumblr blog, even to holding a vulgar poster in front of religious protestors. Its something that we constantly we on a regular day basis. I found the bike to work slogan to be very catchy and charming. “Work to eat, eat to live, live to bike, bike to work.” it a very creative way to advertise riding a bike to work. It almost made me want to do it. (but who is kidding I am not biking it to Disneyland). I feel that taking a position or advertising things in creative ways is the most effective method of getting your point across.

That is something that I feel I excel at. I can go out in public and take a stand, sometimes in vulgar ways but I feel like I can get the point across. Especially in argumentative essays. Arguing is what I do best. I feel like this chapter solidified my confidence in this aspect of my writing. In the past my confidence in writing has been less than existent, but after my english 40 class and now this class. Either from the readings or the papers I have grown as  writer, and I am now just realizing it.
